Monktus are a rock band based in Glasgow
and Edinburgh, consisting of an Andrew, a Craig and a Steve. The three
met at Glasgow University and some occasional jamming led to the formation
of Monktus a short while later. The band’s sound isn’t easy to pin
down but it draws on varied influences from rock to indie to riot
grrrl, and lies somewhere in a soup of Sleater-Kinney, Belle and Sebastian
and Pearl Jam. They’ve also been described as sounding like “Weezer,
if they grew up in Scotland listening to Idlewild.” If forced to pigeonhole
themselves into a genre, Monktus would probably choose Animal Orientated
Rock, owing to the wildlife that peppers their songs. They are named
for a rare and ancient animal, the monktus, which is a cross between
a monkey and a cactus.
Andrew is 24 and plays drums for Monktus. Craig is 24 and does the
singing and guitaring for Monktus. "Steve" Steve is 23 and plays bass
for Monktus, in addition to cultivating beards and his nimble fingers.
The band are currently working on some new songs and hope to complete
a new EP in September. |
